Iron with Vitamin C
A well-tolerated iron supplement (either iron bisglycinate or liposomal iron, depending on the most clinically and price-competitive sourcing) combined with Vitamin C to support absorption. Suited to patients with low ferritin or iron deficiency anaemia identified on a blood test.
Suitability and pricing are confirmed with your clinician at review.
About this product
Iron deficiency is one of the most common findings on routine blood testing, particularly in menstruating women, vegan and vegetarian patients, and in the work-up of fatigue and hair shedding. Per NICE CKS Anaemia (iron deficiency, 2024), the underlying cause should always be identified before long-term supplementation: in post-menopausal women and men this may include gastrointestinal investigation, and our clinicians will review your history and may recommend onward referral before prescribing or supplying iron. We range iron bisglycinate or liposomal iron because both are gentler on the gut than ferrous sulphate and are better tolerated long-term. Vitamin C in the same capsule increases non-haem iron absorption by reducing ferric to ferrous iron in the gut. Final form (bisglycinate vs liposomal) is set by which brand offers the most clinically appropriate and price-competitive option at any given time. Iron should not be taken by patients with iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis without specialist input. Iron supplements reduce absorption of levothyroxine, quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics and bisphosphonates: separate doses by at least 2 hours (UK SmPC), with NICE/BNF guidance commonly advising at least 4 hours for levothyroxine. Bisphosphonates such as alendronic acid must be taken first on an empty stomach with plain water, with any iron taken at least 2 hours later. Keep out of the sight and reach of children, as accidental iron overdose in young children can be fatal; seek immediate medical attention if suspected.
How it works
Iron bisglycinate is a chelated form of iron bound to two glycine molecules, which is absorbed largely intact via amino acid transporters rather than the standard iron transporter. Liposomal iron is encapsulated in a phospholipid bilayer that protects it from the gut and improves absorption. Both forms are associated with fewer gastrointestinal side effects than ferrous sulphate. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) increases absorption of non-haem iron by reducing it to the more bioavailable ferrous form.
