About this product

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are common in the UK across the year and the standard supplement to correct it is cholecalciferol (D3), the same form the skin produces from sunlight. NICE CKS Vitamin D deficiency in adults defines serum 25-OH vitamin D below 25 nmol/L as deficient and 25 to 50 nmol/L as insufficient, with cholecalciferol 800 to 1,000 IU (20 to 25 micrograms) daily as the maintenance dose following loading, or as the starting dose for insufficiency. Higher loading doses (typically up to 4,000 IU daily or 50,000 IU weekly for a short course) are used under clinician guidance for established deficiency. Pairing D3 with Vitamin K2 as MK-7 supports the routing of the calcium that D3 helps absorb, directing it toward bone and away from soft tissue and arterial walls. The MK-7 form of Vitamin K2 has a longer half-life than MK-4 and is the form most commonly used in clinical and supplement settings. Important safety note: Vitamin K2 antagonises warfarin and other coumarin anticoagulants and should not be started without specialist review if you are on these medicines. High-dose cholecalciferol should be discussed with your clinician before starting if you have hypercalcaemia or hypercalciuria, sarcoidosis or other granulomatous disease (such as tuberculosis or lymphoma), primary hyperparathyroidism, a history of calcium-containing kidney stones, or severe kidney impairment, because vitamin D can raise calcium levels and trigger hypercalcaemia in these conditions.

How it works

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is converted by the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (the form measured on a blood test) and then by the kidneys to its active form, calcitriol. Calcitriol regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism, supports immune function, and influences a wide range of other tissues. Vitamin K2 (MK-7) activates osteocalcin and matrix Gla-protein, which direct calcium to bone and inhibit its deposition in soft tissue.
