About this product
Biotin (Vitamin B7) is essential for the metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids and glucose, and is the most commonly marketed "hair, skin and nails" supplement. True biotin deficiency is rare in adults eating a normal mixed diet but supplementation is used adjunctively in brittle nails, in some hair shedding presentations, and in patients on long-term anticonvulsants which reduce biotin levels. Important laboratory note: high-dose biotin interferes with many immunoassay-based blood tests (thyroid function, troponin, hormones) and the patient should stop biotin for at least 48 to 72 hours before any blood draw to avoid spurious results.
How it works
D-Biotin is the natural, bioactive form of Vitamin B7. It acts as a co-factor for four carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, gluconeogenesis, and amino acid metabolism, and contributes indirectly to keratin production in hair and nails. Dietary biotin is found in eggs, nuts, seeds and organ meats, and intestinal bacteria also produce small amounts.
